In this room, Bill Jacklin RA and Eileen Cooper RA wanted to create a sense of lightness, energy and visual playfulness that makes you stand and look. They wanted to mix things up and show things in a new light. They placed works on canvas alongside works under glass, more traditional works with more contemporary, large next to small, old next to young. There is no hierarchy here. The exuberance of recent RA Schools graduate Gabriel Hartley’s large abstract canvas is echoed in the youthful mark-making of Rose Wylie RA’s triptych, while the spectral figures in Aboudia’s vibrant painting find connection with Hughie O’Donoghue RA’s ghostly ship.
