Ann Christopher RA didn’t intend this gallery to have an eerie atmosphere, but as soon as Mimmo Paladino Hon RA’s sculpture was placed against one wall, its fractured planes and dismembered body parts set off a series of visual associations with other works that emphasised the sinister, unnatural and strange. To emphasise this eeriness, Christopher plays with scale and media. Small works hang next to large, detailed photographs next to mysterious paintings, sculptures block our view. But then, looking back at Ian McKeever RA’s three prints, we see shafts of sunlight parting the clouds, a glimpse of hope within the darkness.
