The works in this gallery, chosen by Yinka Shonibare MBE RA, seem to leap off the walls in a riot of colour. The question of identity in art is frequently avoided but, for Shonibare, artists cannot exclude external variables no matter how hard they try. A work of art is made by someone standing in a particular place at a particular time, with his or her own set of identities. For Shonibare, an emphasis on materials and craft is one of the distinctive things diverse artists bring to the Summer Exhibition. As we see with Hassan Hajjaj, who creates a frame of oil cans for his arresting photograph Henna Bikers, they create works of unconventional, dynamic beauty that can break all the rules.
