Gallery VII

Phyllida Barlow RA’s sculptural installations create strong relationships with their architectural surroundings, and she put this skill to effective use when curating Gallery VII. Her choice of blue walls highlights sculptural forms: Cecile Johnson Soliz’s newsprint rope sculpture, Antony Gormley RA’s wall-mounted figure and El Anatsui Hon RA’s shimmering work, which are shown alongside work by the late Gillian Ayres RA. The sculptural shapes and vivid colour of this painting, selected by Ayres’s sons, resonate across the gallery. Among the many different materials included here, wood appears to dominate, from the pale tones of the monumental works of Tony Cragg RA to David Nash RA’s pink, charred wood.
