Gallery III

Hanging Gallery III, our largest gallery, is acknowledged by the Academicians to be the single most challenging task of the Summer Exhibition. Grayson Perry RA, this year’s co-ordinator, took on the challenge of curating it himself; he had no preconceived idea for the room, he told us, except to make sure he included a wide selection of work from both the open submission and by his fellow Academicians. For the end wall, Tony Bevan RA’s large painting of a red tree was Perry’s starting point. He surrounded it with works that focus loosely on current affairs – although he was keen to ensure that, despite the political theme, the selection “did not take itself too seriously”.
