Room: Gallery II

Gallery II

Isaac Julien RA’s proposal for the Summer Exhibition was a homage to the late, great curator Okwui Enwezor, who died in 2019.

Here, Julien focuses on artists who have historically been situated outside, or who work against, established painterly canons — specifically Black artists, many of them female or trans. Invited artists include Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Zanele Muholi, Wangechi Mutu and Frida Orupabo.
