Part of Reclaiming magic: Yinka Shonibare’s picks for 2021

Golda Aruten Okech lives in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya. As Hands On Coach, Golda delivers art workshops to students, supported by Hands On Art Workshops led by artists Lisa Milroy RA and Stephanie Nebbia, and UNHCR, the UN refugee agency.

Okech's painting The Artist was the basis for this limited edition digital print. In Okech’s words:

"The Artist that's my self portrait and it clearly shows the dark color of my skin that i painted and i decided to paint a self portrait coz for me I believe that i am an artist myself and I made it to face a canvas coz I just imagined seeing myself painting and my imaginations is like I am at the back seeing myself painting....and about the yellow blob, I preferred painting yellow coz I mostly see the yellow colour here in Kakuma like when leaves dry and turn yellow then they shed and everywhere around is full of yellow leaves and again sun is yellow and it's mostly Sunny in Kakuma and that makes me love colour yellow in Kakuma. The feeling of being an artist is superb coz it's really fun painting and discovering things through painting".
